There is nothing like going to a high school football game to get you excited about the onset of fall. Tonight was perfect. The weather was cool. The crowd was huge. The game was fun.
And, oh yes...my team won. (Take that, Tom!) This is huge because the Broken Arrow Tigers have not beat the Union Redskins in something like 20 years. The tides are changing now, my friends! It wasn't just any victory either. The score was 24 to 9! WOO HOO!
In previous years, we have made it a habit to take the kids back to our alma mater to watch a few of the football games. It makes for a fun evening. It has become a habit of the kids to chant "B-A! B- A! Broken Arrow Tigers!" every time we drive past the stadium. In previous years, we usually stay a little past half time before we head to the car in order to get the kids home and in bed by a decent hour. I must admit, half time was my favorite anyway since the band plays at half time and Broken Arrow's marching band IS the grandest band in all the land. Seriously, they are the Grand National Champions and they totally rock.
Anyway, neither Joey nor myself are really that into sports. Joey played football for Broken Arrow in high school, but he says he really only did it so that he could someday tell his kids that he played football in high school. He even has a football injury to prove it - ask him about it someday. I was a cheerleader and a basketball player in elementary school, but that is pretty much the extent of my athletic ability. In fact, I think the only reason they let me on those teams in elementary school is because every girl in my class had to play or else we wouldn't have enough players to make up a team. (Yes, I went to a small private school back then.) I may have played other sports during my formative years, but if I did I must have had some experimental mind erasing therapy done to remove the memories of them so as not to have to live with the shame of being the worst player on the team. I don't know. My mind is a little fuzzy just trying to recall any shadow of the word "sports" from my memory.
We are obviously not a very athletically gifted family. Anyway, tonight we realized the impact our non-athleticism has had on our children. These are a few of the comments made by our kiddos this evening:
Hey kids, we get to go to a Broken Arrow football game!
Hannah: "OOOO Yippie! Cheer Girls!"
After sitting down in our seats and seeing the Union band on the field:
Hannah: "Mommy, look at all the beautiful brides!" (the Union color guard wore long white dresses and I am pretty sure the band music was some kind of wedding music - is that weird to anyone else?)
After the players hit the field and began to play:
Jonah: "Mommy, which baseball players are ours?"
During the remainder of the game:
Jonah and Hannah made repeated references to our "baseball players" wearing black.
After we stormed the field at the end of the game:
Jonah: "Where are our baseball players?"
After getting in the car to go home:
Hannah: "I just love those soccer players!"
Not once did our kiddos refer to the football team as a football team, despite our repeated attempts to correct them. It looks like our non-athletic genes may be passed along to the kids. But that is okay. The Bible does say, "For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." (I Timothy 4:8)

The first three paragraphs made me throw up in my mouth just a little...
Kelly,
I know you...kindof. I was in college with Tom and April. I was at your parent's house once and was at Tom and April's wedding, so surely I've met you at least once. I was reading articles about the BA/Union game and your blog popped up on my google search. I love the anniversary picture idea, I wish I would have had that idea 10 years ago. Oh, and my daughter takes dance at the same place your Hannah does. You have great posts.... Carri
If I remember right I think the last time BA beat us was in 1989! Us Redskins can't win every game, right?
I was there last night also. It rocked!
Oh, and cute kids. =)
That is hilarious! It's a bit strange to think of Joey playing football, though. I'm not sure why...Of course, I was shocked to see that you were once a cheerleader (until I saw that it was in elementary school.) I thought I was the only one with that skeleton in my closet. :)
