It is hard to beat THIS song as my all time favorite worship song, but I think I may have found a close second place song today. I might be the last person on the planet to be introduced to THIS song, but I heard it today and love it. It is called "God of this City" and comes from the newest Chris Tomlin albums. (Passion's God of this City Album and Tomlin's Hello Love Album)
I read THIS post today (sorry for all the "this" links) and wondered what the song was all about so I began to research it and and listen to it. I think I listened to it about 60 times today. (That might be a slight exaggeration.) It's a powerful song, my friends. Apparently, it is also a rather popular song out there right now. Sometimes I am leary of jumping on the band wagon with things that are "popular" simply because they are popular. This song is different. Yes, it has a catchy tune and all, but the content of the lyrics speak loud. The words spoke to my heart and brought me to my knees.
I needed to hear these things:
When my mind started racing and I started wondering what might happen to our nation if that other guy wins in November...
The song reminded me
"You're the King of these people. You're the Lord of this nation."
When my daughter insisted on showing her sinful nature to her Kid's Day teachers (and any onlooking parents) and I feel like a failure as a mom...
The song reminded me
"You're the strength in our weakness."
When I'm sad, down in a funk, and crying for no apparent reason...
The song reminded me
"You're the joy in the sadness."
When I find myself frustrated that our church doesn't have a new pastor yet and I begin to wonder and ask God "don't you think we need we need a pastor?" What I am really saying to God is "are you enough for us right now?"...
The song said
"You ARE."
When I am tempted to throw in the towel and give up because my plate is too full already, or nobody appreciates my work anyway or this mommy thing is really hard work...
The song said
"Greater things have yet to come. Greater things are still to be done."
When my church is encouraging evangelism and reaching our city for Christ and I find myself questioning whether I can really make that much of a difference...
The song SHOUTED
"Greater things have yet to come. Greater things are still to be done IN THIS CITY!"
As I reflected on the meaning of the words and how they touched these specific areas of my life, I realized WHY this song holds such popularity right now. I don't believe anyone with a tender heart could hear this song and NOT feel the words speaking directly to whatever is going on in their own "city" (whether that "city" be their world, country, town, home, church, marriage, children or personal life).
What joy I experienced this afternoon as I allowed these words to speak to those very specific areas of my life right now! I felt God singing these words over me and quieting my soul and all the many distractions I face right now. There is a passage of scripture that says, "The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:17)
Thank you, Lord for singing over me today and quieting me with your love. And Thank you, Lord for listening as I sang back to you today using the words of a simple, yet powerful song to echo back to you the truths of your Word.
Now listen/watch this song for yourself:

Kelly,
Once again you grabbed my heart. Thanks for sharing and know that greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world.
Love you
Dad
Kelly,
I love that song too - and what's really great, is that I was praying yesterday that God would somehow encourage you - Praise!
Love, Mom
We sang this song at church just last Sunday, and I had a lot of those same thoughts! What a good God we serve!!!!
