If You Give a Woman a Table

A little over a year and a half ago, I saw my "dream table" while shopping for a new couch. But our current table suited us just fine at the time. Some of my more faithful readers may remember THIS post in which I described that dining room table as a "small table big on memories." That table was good to us. But a few days ago, my husband graciously purchased me my "dream table." This is a comical recollection of my thoughts the past few days:

If you give a woman a table,
.
she's going to need the chairs to go with it.
(no less than 6 chairs, by the way)
.
When you get the table and chairs set up in her house,
.
She will realize her chandelier hangs too low for this table
so she will ask you to replace the light fixture.
.
Once the light fixture is installed,
.
She will sit down at the table and realize how big this table is compared to her previous table.
.
She will decide to make more room by asking you to figure out a way to cut off the extra part of the counter that infringes on her dining room table space.
.
While you are trying to figure out how to accomplish this task, she will change her mind and ask if you can simply install all new counter tops.
.
Then she will daydream about new counter tops that don't have any imperfections.
.
While she is daydreaming, she will think about how it would be nice if the new counter tops were accompanied by new cabinet doors.
.
She will inform you that she has always wanted white kitchen cabinets instead of the oak ones that she has.
.
She will ask if she can paint the existing cabinets white and then buy new hardware so her kitchen will have that "modern" look.
.
White cabinets would look awesome in this house, but then she will realize the stove is off white. That would have to go.
.
So she will ask you for a new stove.
.
Of course, the hood over the stove is also off-white, so that would need to be replaced too.
.
All these plans will swirl around in her head for a few days
.
UNTIL...
.
She sits down to do her Bible Study on Proverbs.
.
This week happens to be on wise vs. foolish women.
.
She thinks she is in the clear.
.
Then she reads this:
"By wisdom a house is built,
and through understanding it is established;
through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures."
(Proverbs 24:3-4)
.
Oops.
.
She realizes that she has spent more time this week seeking to fill her house with "rare and beautiful treasures" from this world than she has spent seeking the wisdom, understanding and knowledge she so needs from God.
.
She repents.
.
She sits down for a nice dinner with her family at her new table.
.
She thanks the Lord for blessing her in so many ways.
.
Then she looks around at the rest of the house...
.
and smiles with contentment.
.
.
(The format of that little story was inspired by one of our favorite children's books, If you give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff.)
(The center of the table has a glass circle with a lazy susan. The kids are thrilled to have a table with a lazy susan just like their great grandparent's table.)

HA! I love it! So like a woman's mind. I sat down and read the exact verse for tonight's Bible study and thought some of the same things! :) Great post!!!

sad to say but that is so true. I love the table. I painted my cabinets white and glazed them so they look older. It wasnt to hard.

How timely! I was just struggling with the same thing, only mine was my wardrobe. You know...
If you buy a woman a new pair of shoes, she will ask you for some socks to go with them.

When you give her the socks, she will want some jeans that look just right.

When you give her the jeans, she will need a belt to match the shoes.

And of course a shirt to go with the belt.

Then she will quickly realze that the rest of her clothes are inferior, too.

Then her friend will post a blog to help her realize this is one of the ways that Satan can distance us from the things of the Lord.

She repents and enjoys the many blessings the Lord has given her also!

Thanks for the reminder! -Dana

I love your spin on that beloved kid's book - we like those, too. Thanks for the funny, yet true, reminder of what kinds of things in life REALLY matter :)
