To Card or Not to Card

I love Christmas cards.

Honestly, Christmas cards might be one of the few things that I hoard. I save them in large Ziploc bags and label them by year. Each year, when I unpack my Christmas decor, I find myself distracted (once again) looking over the Christmas cards we've received over the years. Looking back on them always makes me smile - especially homemade ones and the ones with photos. I even like the letters that take forever to read. I can't explain it. It's just one of those quirks about me.

I understand if I am alone on this one.

In the past, I've been somewhat creative with my cards. For example, the year Hannah was born, I sent our Christmas cards along with birth announcements. Joey wrote the most adorable poem inside the card that year.

(This picture is from Hannah's scrapbook which is pretty hilarious, because I finished all of three pages of her scrapbook. Lame, Kelly. Lame.)

The following year, we got all unique and creative and sent a Year-in Review Crossword puzzle for our Christmas card. I'm pretty sure only like 2 people actually worked the crossword, but we did get a lot of "that's cute" kind of comments. And I'm fairly sure the "that's cute" comments were not just a kind way of saying "I think you are retarded in a cute kind of way." People really did think it was a cute idea. (At least that is what I'm telling myself.)

2006-2007 are a blur. If I sent out Christmas cards those years, I don't remember. I didn't save them if I did.

The year 2008 marked the year that I rebelled against all things snail mail and decided to make a series of super fun crazy family music videos that we posted on this here blog in order to wish all our friends and family a Merry Christmas. Those were fun. We made three. You can view them HERE if you missed last year. Joey is still trying to forgive me for making him do that one called "God Bless you this Christmas."

This year is the first year in all of our married life that we actually have some professional family photos that could be made into a cool Christmas card. (Photos by the very talented Sarah Dunlap who is amazing and I am sure would be willing to take your family photos as well. Call her. Just a little commercial there.) A number of weeks ago, I put all those photos together to make this Christmas card on iPhoto:

I only have a couple problems. First, that blank space on the right side...I don't know what to write. (Hard to believe? I know. I think it is something about the fact that I worry other people save cards like me and might look back on it 10 years from now and be bored reading it.) Second, I don't know who to send them to. Should I only send them to people who send us (or have sent us in the past) cards? Should I send them to everyone we know? ($$$$!!) What to do, what to do... Third, I don't know if I have all the right addresses for people. Since it has been three years since I've sent a snail mail card, I worry all my addresses are wrong. So... I have a dilemma.

Oh. And I just thought of another dilemma. If I publish this post, all our family and friends who reads this blog will have already gotten a glimpse of our (possible) Christmas card so they won't think it is anything special when they get it in the mail. gummit.

Help!

I just asked the kids if we should send Christmas cards this year. Hannah started off on a long flowery description of why we should send cards "because we love those people SO much." Jonah (very matter-of-factly) stated "Yes. We should send them... to the tigers in the zoo." Silly kids. They tickle me.

To card, or not to card: that is the question.

THANK YOU. I save cards too, but only the photo ones. My husband makes so much fun of me. Glad I'm not alone. :)

I don't think that, but I just couldn't pass up typing it in your comment box. :)
